Hole size is one input, not the whole repair decision

Choose a method from diameter, paper and gypsum condition, edge support, board thickness, texture, moisture, and the certainty of what is behind the wall. A small ragged hole with crushed paper can need more support than a cleaner larger opening, while any proposed cut is out of DIY scope when wiring or water lines cannot be cleared.

Stop before classifying an unsafe wall

Do not sand or cut pre-1978 painted surfaces without an appropriate lead-safe plan. Do not disturb suspect asbestos texture or compound; it cannot be identified reliably by sight. Stop for wet, moldy, soft, crumbly, plaster, masonry, or unknown substrates, broad impact damage, structural cracking, unknown wall assemblies, and any uncertain service path.

Branch 1: fill-only for a sound surface defect

A shallow nail hole, dent, or small face defect with intact surrounding paper may fit a spackling or patch compound specifically labeled for that depth and substrate. Remove only loose fragments, use thin coats, let each coat dry, and keep the repair wider only as needed to feather the edge. If the fill sinks, cracks, or has no sound edge to bond to, stop adding material and reconsider support.

Branch 2: a supported patch when the opening has lost its face

A larger opening may need a listed mesh or repair patch, or a real gypsum insert, rather than a deep mass of filler. Follow the patch maker's size, backing, compound, and coat instructions. USG offers purpose-made 1/2- and 5/8-inch repair panels for normal stud spacing, which illustrates why board thickness and support matter.

Do not bridge an unsupported, moving edge merely because a retail patch covers the visible diameter.

Branch 3: cut-in methods require a cleared, known wall

USG demonstrates a California-style patch for openings approximately 6 by 6 inches and smaller. That dimension belongs to the named manufacturer method; it is not a universal safe cutoff. A cut-in repair also requires a known drywall assembly, controlled edges, appropriate thickness, and certainty that the cut path is clear.

If any service location is uncertain, do not use a saw, knife, screw, or drill to investigate. A scanner is an aid with model-specific limits, not permission to cut.

Plan the finish before committing to the patch

Record texture scale, paint sheen, side lighting, and the width available for feathering. PPG's large-hole method uses a patch larger than the opening, light compound coats, drying, and feathering as needed. The final blend may extend well beyond the hole; texture and gloss can make a technically sound patch visible.

Verify each stage and hand off expanding scope

Photograph the opening, support, first coat, final dry coat, primer, and paint. Check that the patch is firm and dry before sanding or coating. Stop if edges move, cracking continues, moisture or staining returns, or the opening reveals an unknown assembly. Those conditions need a qualified trade or building professional rather than a cosmetic size-based method.
